listen to their favorite music through personal headphones anywhere and at any time. Sales in the first two months far exceeded expectations and as global sales took off the player was branded the Sony Walkman. Many variations of the original were subsequently developed to meet growing demand and by the time the cassette version was replaced by the compact disc version in 2010 worldwide sales had reached 186 million.
