Facts About Liverpool Street Station

Liverpool Street Station which is also known as London Liverpool Street is a central London train terminus in the north east of the City of London. It opened in 1874 replacing Bishopsgate Station and is the terminus for two main lines. Firstly , the busier Great Eastern Main Line that travels to Norwich and the West Anglia Main Line that travels to Cambridge.

Liverpool Street was built as a dual level station with access to the London Underground and this is why there are considerable gradients when leaving. The station was designed by engineer Edward Wilson and built by Lucas Brothers whilst the roof itself was designed and constructed by Fairburn Engineering Company. Despite being regarded as an expensive white elephant the railway became so popular that it quickly reached capacity. An expansion was needed
and when granted by Parliament a condition ensured that local residents displaced by the works had to be rehoused at the cost of the GER.

During World War I three bombs dropped by the Gotha G.IV German bomber planes hit the station killing 16 people.

Following the re-organisation of the railways in an attempt to stem losses Liverpool Street became owned by the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER).

During World War II thousands of Jewish children arrived at Liverpool Street as part of the Kindertransport rescue mission from Nazi controlled territory. Only minor damage was received during the war. In the years after the war a move to electrify the railway was carried out and works were completed by the early 1960s.
