Facts About King`s Cross Station
Situated in the London Borough of Camden is the railway passenger terminus known as King`s Cross Station - sometimes called London`s King`s Cross.
The station was opened in 1852 by the Great Northern Railway to accommodate the East Coast Main Line and allow passengers to travel to North East England and Scotland. It was the fifth terminal to be constructed and today is one of the busiest stations in the United Kingdom. Together with St. Pancras and the London Underground it forms one of Britain`s largest transport hubs.
Following its construction the station quickly grew in popularity throughout the 19th century and was expanded on numerous occasions. After the passing of the Railways Act 1921 which was introduced to reduce competition and stem losses of Britain`s 120 railway stations Kings Cross came under the ownership of London and North Eastern Railway (LNER). One famous service of note that was introduced was the Flying Scotsman from London to Edinburgh along the eastern line.
During World War II Kings Cross station accommodated thousands of troops and civilians. Many journeys carried over 2000 people due to engine shortages. On 11th May 1941 , two large bombs hit platform 10 causing widespread damage and killing 12 people.
In January 1948 the railways were nationalised to form British Rail and Kings Cross came under the control of British Railways` Eastern Division. During the 1950s steam was phased out and diesel trains introduced. In September 1973 the station suffered another bomb attack when a young IRA sympathiser threw a bomb into the booking hall causing extensive damage. He ran into the crowds and was never caught.
Between 1985 and 1991 British Rail completed electrification of the East Coast Main Line up to Leeds and Edinburgh. Inter City 225 rolling stock was subsequently introduced and completed by summer 1991.
Following privatisation in 1996 , Kings Cross was in need of an urgent renovation and Network Rail`s £500m plan was approved by Camden London Borough Council in 2007. See image above.
