1.  Steve Jobs

Did you know that 1997 was the year that Steve Jobs returned to his beloved Apple?

This was the year when Apple announced its purchase of the IT firm NeXT paying
the sum of $427 million. This deal brought the American entrepreneur , Steve Jobs
back to Apple , the company that he co-founded. Jobs had left Apple in 1985 after
losing a power struggle with the board and eventually created NeXT , a computer
platform development company. By 1996 , Apple was in trouble and near bankruptcy
but with the help of Jobs who took control of the company as interim CEO and 
oversaw the creation of iMac , iTunes , iPodiPad and iPhone the company was
saved.

Sadly , Steve Jobs died of cancer on October 5th 2011 , aged just 56

Apple is now one of the richest companies in the world.


2. Men in Black - The Movie by Columbia Pictures

This year saw the release of the science fiction comedy film Men in Black

The film was based upon Lowell Cunningham`s comic book series by the 
same name and directed by Barry Sonnenfeld. Starring Tommy Lee Jones
and Will Smith , the movie is about two agents of a top secret organisation
called Men in Black who have the job of supervising aliens who live on 
Earth and hide their existence from other humans. Some say that such 
agents do exist - who knows?.

The movie , which cost $90 miliion to make and was released in July 1997 
became an instant success and grossed over $589 million worldwide. This
success sowaned Men in Black II and Men in Black 3.


3. J.K.Rowling

Joanne Rowling , the British novelist has her debut novel released. The book
- Harry Potter and The Philosopher`s Stone tells the story of a young wizard`s
first year at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizadry.

The book was a massive success and spawned the Harry Potter fantasy series
and sold more than 400 million copies worldwide. Initially , Joanne
submitted the book to 12 different publishers - all of whom rejected it - before it 
was taken on by Bloomsbury Publishing. Not only have the books become the 
best selling book series in history buy the film versions have also become the
highest grossing film series in history surpassing Star Wars , Batman and
James Bond
