2. On 4th October 1957 , Russia launched its first Earth satellite into orbit called Sputnik 1. The batteries lasted a few weeks and subsequently the satellite returned to Earth in January 1958

4. David Lean releases Bridge On The River Kwai starring Alec Guiness.
